Programmatic Pre-Fab Design Review: Netlist-to-PCB Audit, DRC & Gerber Verification
Before sending Gerbers and your SMT BOM to JLCPCB, learn how automated pre-fabrication checks caught 9 real-world engineering issues on this board—and write a runnable 5-stage Python audit script (prefab_design_audit.py) that verifies op-amp specs, thermal budgets, rail headroom, pin connectivity, and BOM partitioning automatically.
Step 1. Anatomy of a Real-World Hardware Design Review
Passing SKiDL's ERC() proves that your Python netlist is electrically sound, but physical PCB layout introduces geometric and analog traps that only a post-layout Design Rules Check (DRC) and pre-fabrication audit can catch.
During the engineering review of BufferedMult.kicad_pcb, running kicad-cli pcb drc --refill-zones alongside automated PCB, Gerber, and BOM analyzers caught and resolved 9 real issues before ordering boards:
| Category | Initial Finding | Root Cause & Engineering Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Critical Open Net | U1 Pin 5 (INB+) unrouted |
Stage B's non-inverting input pin was left unrouted on B.Cu, which would have left OUT_1A floating. Routed U1:5 to CH1_BUF (0 unconnected items). |
Isolated GND Island |
C5 Pad 2 disconnected from main GND |
On a narrow 20.0 mm (4HP) strip, dense through-hole jack pad clearances pinched off the copper pour around C5 Pad 2 into an isolated island. Fixed by adding GND stitching vias (12 total GND vias tying F.Cu and B.Cu pours together). |
| Power Spine Width | +12V / -12V routed at 0.20 mm |
Signal-width power traces add unnecessary series impedance. Assigned SKiDL's NetClass("Power", trace_width=0.5, clearance=0.25) and widened both power spines to 0.50 mm, while pulling the -12V spine inward to X = 20.8 mm to clear the board edge. |
| Op-Amp Phase Inversion | Legacy JFET TL074CDR (C12594) |
Classic JFET-input TL074C op-amps suffer from input phase inversion if an external signal drives an input near the negative rail—latching the output to +V. Upgraded to TI's modern CMOS TL074HIDR (TL074H, LCSC C2878713), which eliminates phase inversion, lowers offset to 1 mV typ, and increases slew rate to 20 V/µs. |
| SMT vs. THT BOM CSV | THT jacks in general BOM export | Uploading a raw KiCad BOM that includes THT parts (J1–J13, C1, C2) causes JLCPCB's SMT parser to flag missing LCSC codes or quote manual soldering fees. Using our filtered buffered_multiple_jlcpcb_bom.csv exports strictly the 29 B.Cu SMD parts across 7 unique lines. |

Step 2. Distinguishing Real Blockers from Benign 4HP Form-Factor Warnings
Automated PCB and EMC analyzers also flag geometric heuristics that an experienced Eurorack designer knows are intentional for a 4HP (20.0 mm) module. Knowing why an alert is benign is just as important as fixing real bugs:
- Jack Courtyard at
0.0 mmfrom Board Edge (PM-002): EachWQP-PJ398SM(Thonkiconn) housing is10.0 mmwide. Placing two columns centered atX = 25.0 mmandX = 35.0 mmon a board spanningX = 20.0..40.0 mmaligns the plastic jack bodies flush with the left and right PCB edges by design, while every copper pad sits safely inside the outline. - Series Schottky Drop vs. Unclipped Output Headroom: Our
1N5819WSreverse-polarity protection diodes (D1,D2) drop~0.38 Vper rail, supplying±11.62 V(23.24 Vspan) toU1–U3. WithTL074H's output stage, unclipped output swing is~±10.4 V—comfortably covering Eurorack's±5 Vaudio/LFO and0..+10 VCV standards while guaranteeing indestructible power plug protection.
Step 3. Write a 5-Stage Python Pre-Fab Audit Function (run_prefab_audit())
Because our entire circuit lives in Python objects inside builtins.default_circuit, we can write unit-test-style assertions that inspect every part, pin net, NetClass, thermal calculation, and exported BOM row automatically:
def run_prefab_audit(bom_rows: list[dict]) -> list[tuple[str, str, str]]:
"""Run five automated pre-fabrication checks against the active SKiDL circuit."""
circuit = builtins.default_circuit
by_ref = {p.ref: p for p in circuit.parts}
results = []
# 1. Op-Amp MPN & Thermal Dissipation Check

all_tl074h = all(
u.value == "TL074H" and u.fields.get("LCSC") == "C2878713" for u in opamps
)
supply_span_v = 2 * (12.0 - 0.38) # +/-11.62V post-Schottky rails = 23.24V span
pkg_mw = 5.6 * supply_span_v # 5.6mA typ Iq per quad TL074H
results.append(

f"Pd = {pkg_mw:.1f} mW/pkg ({3 * pkg_mw:.1f} mW total)"
),
)
)
# 2. Reverse-Polarity Diode & Bulk Capacitor Polarity Check
d1, d2 = by_ref["D1"], by_ref["D2"]
c1, c2 = by_ref["C1"], by_ref["C2"]
pol_ok = (

and d1["K"].net.name == "+12V"
and d2["K"].net.name == "-12V_RAW"
and d2["A"].net.name == "-12V"
and c1.p[1].net.name == "+12V"
and c1.p[2].net.name == "GND"
and c2.p[1].net.name == "GND"
and c2.p[2].net.name == "-12V"
)
results.append(

"D1/D2 1N5819WS (+/-11.6V rails, +/-10.4V swing) & C2.1(+)->GND, C2.2(-)->-12V verified",
)
)
Step 4. Complete Runnable Script (prefab_design_audit.py)
Here is the complete, standalone 383-line script in tutorial/apps/0008-prefab-design-review-and-drc/prefab_design_audit.py:
#!/usr/bin/env python3
"""

1. Op-Amp MPN & Phase-Inversion Audit (TL074H / C2878713 + thermal budget)
2. Schottky Reverse-Polarity & Bulk Cap Polarity / Headroom Audit
3. Critical Pin Connectivity Audit (catching U1:5 open-circuit & C3-C8 GND islands)

1. Why did we upgrade U1–U3 from the legacy JFET TL074CDR (C12594) to Texas Instruments' modern CMOS TL074HIDR (TL074H, LCSC C2878713) during our design review?
2. What caused the C5 Pad 2 (GND) open-circuit warning in the initial PCB layout review, and how was it resolved in BufferedMult.kicad_pcb?
